Magazine Leader - June 2012

From the Churchwarden - June 2012

Last month Chris talked about the ups and downs of life and the “no gain without pain” syndrome.  How right he was!

We both thought we had seen some light at the end of the tunnel.  Our interregnum was going well with lots of support from local Clergy, we had interviews planned for a new Vicar and the sun was shining.    But how things can change so quickly and when you are least expecting them to.  We had the lead stolen from our Church roof over multiple nights, Chris and I decided not to select any of the candidates who were interviewed and the rain came!

Chris and I wondered what on earth had we done to deserve this sequence of events when there was already enough to do and we needed to start to see some results (for our own sanity), but it wasn’t to be and I’m not really surprised. I am a firm believer that our Lord continually challenges us in order to make us stronger and that he will only push us as far as we can go because he knows every one of us by name and is always there at our side.   It has, however been more than faith that has carried us through these last few weeks. It has been the strength and the support that every one of you has shown to us and the love that has resonated throughout our Church.  I hope that I don’t sound too ‘corporate’ when I say that we are a team but we are, and the team is getting much stronger. When we eventually find our new vicar we should be ready to take a huge leap forward - just don’t ask us yet which way it will take us because we are hoping for some divine intervention on that front J

You will all be equally disappointed that we did not manage to appoint a new vicar but we will when the right one comes along.  It is an important task as it will affect the future of the parish and it simply needs a lot more prayer.

As to the Church roof, I think we have all been shocked at the sheer arrogance shown by those who stole the lead.  It takes some nerve to return night after night knowing there was a night watch in action.   Chris and I are extremely grateful to all of you who gave up your sleep to keep watch over the Church and also to our local police who supported us in trying to protect what was left.   We are now in the process of obtaining quotes for the damage and I expect that we will need a campaign to raise some additional funds for the cost of repairs to the roof, the new lighting and decoration as the insurance is unlikely to cover all of these.  It is a real test not to feel angry or bitter but I urge you to take refuge in the following words from Colossians;

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

I’ll finish with my lasting memory of the past weeks which came through the words of Bishop Nicholas when during one of the interviews he asked a question which was not on our list.  He simply asked one of the candidates, Where is the joy of Jesus Christ in your life?   If we focus on the answer to that question in our own lives then surely we can endure whatever is thrown at us unexpectedly.

May the joy of Jesus Christ be in your lives forever.
